“We’ve lost our ever-lovin’ minds”

It’s a catch phrase I’ve been using for a while. I have a lot of faith in humanity and I believe deep down that there are some great connections we can make across these deep divisions. I want to believe we share a “loving mind” at heart but it’s getting harder and harder to hold onto that notion.

Let’s revisit some of the “best of” the mind-losing moments of the pandemic:

This is perhaps the saddest theme we saw over and over during the pandemic. We made our kids out to be massive wallops of disease-spreading tiny beings. Then we kept them from their kin.

We've lost our ever-lovin' minds. "A care pod being installed in Bell Elementary on Chicago's North side. Chicago PS said that as a supplement to care rooms, a small fraction of our schools have been provided with care pods as a contingency safety measure."

The “virtual learning centers” are the all the rage. Teachers can’t be near the potential disease so they send in other adults to help kids, at school, while they teach them from another classroom over Zoom

This is the inside of an MNPS "virtual learning center," where students are assisted by in-person staff in a room of similar size, ventilation, and ability to physically distance as a classroom. Only thing missing are teachers. It only makes sense if you don't think about it.

Band. There are hundreds of these. For some reason we decided to burden our kids with our fears. We kept them from school and when they got to school we kept them from each other. There will be no Wyton Marsalis of this generation methinks.

I find this picture so sad. This is a band class at my daughters high school. Today was their first day back on an every 3 weeks rotating 3 cohort schedule. How can you have a band with only 2 students? I’m afraid for the future of performing arts in public schools. #letthemplay

Remember when masks were a performative control mechanism - oh they still are. This was just in May where a school REWARDED students with no mask time if they were good. It’s SCIENCE!

The other 1st grade class had so many students excited to learn about mandrills! One of them jumped up, excited to explain both how the board worked and how scary madrills looked.
