Many, or even most, of the previous Screwtape Letter gave me a chuckle. This one actually made me angry. Not at you, Justin, for authoring it. At us, for believing a single morsel of the complete bovine feces contained in each rule. I vividly remember the lines on the floor, indicating "safe directions" for movement. I can't even...
Make absolutely no mistake, the sheep--and I realize that's an overly broad pejorative--will follow whatever dumb-assed rules are launched next time.
I ignored each and ever sign, went whatever direction I damn well wanted to go, stood as close or as near as I damn well wanted to stand next to someone and generally gave not one shit about what other people had to say, sans mask through it all. Ignoring the barking chihuahua's that yipped at me to put one on. If a doberman was unwavering I said f it, you ain't getting my money. Strange how most of the places with doberman's I chose to not enrich are now closed. Hmmm.
I remember when the big park near me put up signs all over the place directing foot traffic in a specific direction. I made a point of yanking out each and every one of them, tearing the paper in half, tossing the wire and wood they were on into the bushes and grass far, far away from where they were placed. If they put up new ones the same fate awaited them. They finally stopped putting them up. If only others had done the same. But that obedience Dr. F and Uncle Screwtape speak of, it tripped out many, and those not tripped out didn't care enough to make a big deal of anything and went along. They are just as guilty, if not moreso. They knew better. And went along anyways.
I hazard to guess that's the single largest number of people around us. The fewest were those of us who resisted. The next fewest were the true believers, but the largest chunk knew better but thought it "wasn't their hill to die on." The Banality of Evil, as Hannah Arendt wrote about.
The Banality of Evil is an apt description. Picking a hill to die upon is one of the first tests of being a Honey Badger, to use Gad Saad's nomenclature. Quick Story. I used to post all manner of extremely derogatory anti-mask messages on Twitter. One day, one of my followers, a guy I knew IRL, asked me, "Is masking seriously the hill you want to die on, Wilt?" Or words to that effect. I responded yes. He, like many other liberal know-it-alls, left Twitter in a huff months later. Apparently, *knowing* that Elon owned it, versus having no idea who owned it, made it a place he could not inhabit. #FacePalm
Masks were/are the hill to die on. They are, always have been speech. Mandated speech: "Be fearful, there's a dangerous contagious disease out there, stay away." Symbolic speech. The oldest form of speech known to man. Understood by even the illiterate.
Seriously, that's the "why" they became mandated as NPI (nonpharmaceutical intervention). Amplifying fear (aka, terrorize) so people would obey authorities and give up individual rights. Textbook totalitarian tool of social control.
There's a reason that pre-2020 only terrorists and bank robber wore masks: to frighten everyone into compliance. Seeing masks works on the amygdala exactly like seeing snakes. Scientific studies prove it. And is why they were mandated. Not to medically prevent transmission. Which many antimaskers have prove ad nauseum. Wrong science. The science of masking was/is Behavioral science.
Behavioral science uses psychology-informed symbols and language to change perspectives to produce a desired behavior. Compelling masks was compelling everyone to say, "Be fearful. Do as you're told. I'm scared. You should be, too."
Mandated speech. Flip side of same First Amendment coin as prohibited speech. To display a bare face in public was to say, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." And the Behavioral Scientists (BS'ers) couldn't have that contradictory message out there, would've defeated the NPI. Would've reduced the fear. Would've had a less obedient population. Totalitarians demand obedience.
Anyone who said "Masks aren't my hill to die on" were actually saying "Free speech isn't my hill to die on." The First Amendment disintegrated with mask compliance. The majority of the population consented to its elimination/reduction. All censorship that's happened since was done because the population consented, said free speech isn't a hill worth dying on. And here we are.
thanks so much for these great analysis of the hanging in the balance we are all in..with Sins of Commission and Ommision front and center... great writing..
