I once got into an email debate with a reporter for the Milwaukee Sentinel (and Gannett) about who was a real "expert" on Covid. He said I wasn't an expert because I didn't have any science or medical degrees. I replied, I didn't need any as I'd been researching Covid topics for 8 hours a day for years. The topics I was researching were topics he never would even consider.
He even sent me links to dozens of Covid stories, he'd written. I replied that they were all just pushing the authorized narrative and he might as well be a stenographer. He also had deadlines and had to file X stories per week, where as a freelance writer and journalist I did not. I also opined that I could look at the big picture and connect some dots he wasn't connecting because I was considering a far broader range of subjects.
I gave him lots of great story ideas, Covid stories which nobody at Gannett had written about ... but he wound't act on any of my "news tips" or story suggestions. Which is a giant "tell."
