Thank you for explaining a phenomenon that my Boomer self just doesn't get. The very idea that "safety" can be created by eliminating harmful speech/actions is alien to me: Cruelty from others has been an unpleasant but inescapable part of my life. That's what damaged people in a damaged culture do. It is ludicrous to me that schools think they can eliminate harm...
There is much truth in your above essay, Justin, to which I'd add that the proper exercise of authority requires a level of diligence and honesty that is selfless at its core.
That selflessness cannot be imposed from without, which is the defining mistake of our age; the idea that nobility of purpose can be inculcated with blame and shame. Too many who are unqualified to lead, are in a position of authority, and that is the origin of our failure to provide the young with the cognitive and emotional tools they need to obtain and retain their integrity.
